Breadcrumb

Breadcrumbs show users where the page they're viewing stands in the hierarchy of the website. They appear as a row of links which the users can interact with to navigate the levels of the website. The last breadcrumb is not a link, as this represents the page the user is already on.

Best practice

Purpose

As helpful as they are, breadcrumbs should never replace the main navigation on a page.

Placement

Breadcrumbs are positioned at the top left corner of the page, below the header.

Navigation

Breadcrumbs help users navigate backwards to higher-ranked pages only. The university home page is not always included in the breadcrumb trail.

Link text

The titles of previous pages appear as the link text in GEM's breadcrumbs. They should not be truncated.
