Common FAQs
Why has the GEM Design System been implemented?
GEM was created to help us work together on digital projects with greater ease and consistency. It consists of reusable components and clear standards that can be used across any number of applications. Our web site will steadily become more aligned as GEM rolls out across all pages.
If I use GEM do I still need User Experience and User Interface designers?
Yes. Every project should have a UX designer and a UI designer, no matter how small – even if it is just to review the design. This ensures that the interaction design and interface designs are consistent, and align with the GEM system.
How can I get my web pages GEMified?
Macquarie's site is very large, so we're applying GEM to it section by section. You can raise a OneHelp ticket to find out where your pages fit in our overall plan.
Which browsers does GEM support?
We offer full support for the current Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Microsoft Edge browser versions, including one version back. We offer partial support for Internet Explorer 11. If you're experiencing difficulties, make sure you are running the latest browser.
I'd like a single column page but my area of the site has navigation and a central column for content.
Single column pages are reserved for main, landing and campaign pages. If you believe you need your content full-width, please contact us with your justification through OneHelp.
I've found a bug – what should I do?
Raise a OneHelp ticket. To help us resolve your issue please include as much information as you can, including:
- what happened
- what you expected to happen
- what browser you are using
- the steps to recreate the issue.
I've looked through the GEM Components and can't find a suitable design for my content.
GEM aims to support as much individual content as possible, while ensuring all components are reusable rather than bespoke. Raise a OneHelp ticket outlining what you need and we can assess your requirements.
Can I use GEM in my projects?
GEM is open for anyone to use, as long as it fits within the rollout of GEM across the website – this stops your project looking out of place. Contact us through OneHelp and we can give you specific advice.
Does GEM account for different accessibility needs?
Yes. GEM complies to AA accessibility standards, as we want to make our website usable by as many people as possible. We have been through a formal accessibility review not just for people with disabilities but also to benefit groups on mobile devices and slow network connections.
