Images

Used effectively, images can help to emphasise the content of your web page.

Images can:

  • explain complex issues more quickly than words
  • draw attention and trigger emotion.

Over a third of people are visual learners, and images can help overcome language barriers to communicate your message. Ensure your images are relevant to the content on your page, and that they don't take up too much space above the fold.

Archaeological projects

We have developed archaeological field projects in Egypt, four in the Nile Valley, in Israel, in Greece, and in Croatia. Students in the Department have a range of opportunities to participate in these projects overseas. A unique feature of studying history at Macquarie is our commitment to Professional and Community Engagement (PACE) as part of our degrees. Students can work directly with academics on new research projects or overseas in the field to make new archaeological discoveries.

Keep NSW in a Healthy state

Healthcare matters. It matters for us as individuals, for our communities and for governments. Health is a primary determinant of our quality of life and for advancing human development. Good healthcare is consistently rated as a top priority by the Australian people in surveys of voting intentions. Over the past fifty years healthcare has become increasingly important to global economies, including in NSW, where it is now one of the state’s biggest industries in terms of spending and employment, and set to grow further.

Use meaningful images

Images should enhance and help to illustrate the content of a page. For every image on  your site, you should be able to answer the following two questions:

  • Why does it need to be this particular image?
  • Why did you place the image where you placed it, and not somewhere else?
Show real people

When using images with faces in your design, double check that the focus of attention in the image is appropriate. Try not to use stock images; instead use high quality photographs of people who actually work or study with Macquarie.

Optimising image size

Always resize your images correctly. Large images will extend the page's loading time, causing users to lose interest while they're waiting.

Don't put large images above the fold

Don't set the priority of your images too high. If you make a large image the first thing that users see, they may not see the content that appears further down the page. Make sure you give users a reason to scroll further to see more of your site.
